Drink tea to lower the risk of diabetes

Drink at least 4 cups of tea a day to slash the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. A research on European populations conducted by Christian Herder and his team from the Leibniz Center for Diabetes Research at Heinrich Heine University, Duesseldorf, Germany found that people in countries that drank four cups of tea a day had 20% lower risk of developing the disease. The study also claimed heavy tea drinkers got the maximum benefits and drinking one to three cup of tea a day did not lower the risk.

“Tea consumption may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes by influencing glucose digestion, glucose uptake, and by protecting beta-cells from free-radical damage. This beneficial effect may be due to the polyphenols present in tea,” the Times of India quoted the researcher as saying. The research was conducted among 12,403 type 2 diabetes sufferers plus thousands of others without the disease, reported the newspaper.
